How are performed stories made acceptable and relevant to a local culture? What characterizes Taiwan storytelling performances? This study was done in order to answer those questions, encompassing 57 videos of individual stories performed in drama, poetry, and music. Because Taiwan has a historically oral and visual culture, Taiwanese performance and communication lean more heavily on nonverbal than verbal communication. This incorporates touch, body movements, power distance, social roles, and interaction. Thus, analysis of performances focused not on words but on nonverbal communication. This dissertation reveals four outstanding characteristics of Taiwanese performances that were integral to indigenization of the Bible stories being shared. Humor was evident in nearly every drama performance, as well as in some poetry and music. Even serious stories had comedic elements because comedy and tragedy are thought to be a realistic combination. Symbolic drama gestures based on Taiwanese opera were prevalent. Distinct and highly codified gender roles were clear, resulting from a cultural history of all-male or all-female itinerant song, dance, and drama troupes. Participants and audiences were comfortable with male and female impersonations. Performers in this traditionally collectivist culture often interacted with audiences directly instead of pretending to ignore them, just as Shakespearean actors did. This research leans on performance studies, an interdisciplinary academic field using "doings" or performance to study the world. Among others, it draws from theories of the performing arts, sociology, anthropology, gender, and literary theory. Additional research led to readings in the history, theories or application of biblical performance criticism, education, neuroscience, orality, Bible storytelling, business, Taiwanese history and humor.
