Youth sport participation rates have shown a dramatic decrease in participation at 13 years of age. A lack of enjoyment during the sporting experience is one of many factors associated with the steep decrease. The current study explored the relationship between motivational climate and sport enjoyment in middle and late adolescent team sport interscholastic athletes. Through a purposive sampling method, participants (N = 154) completed both the SEYSQ and PMCSQ-2. The current study examined the relationship between six constructs of sport enjoyment and both task and ego-involved motivational climate. The results demonstrated a significant relationship existed between five of the six constructs of sport and enjoyment and a task-involved motivational climate; two constructs of sport enjoyment were significantly correlated to an ego-involved motivational climate. The results of the current study indicate the need for both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational characteristics to be present in the youth team sporting culture to create the most enjoyable sporting experience for middle and late adolescent team sport participants.
