The purpose of this plausibility probe case study was to discover how instructors and students perceived the ease of use and usefulness of biometrics in an online learning management system as a means of authentication and identification of all users. In the field of online learning, biometrics is a relatively new technology that enables users to be identified and authenticated by a physical characteristic, as opposed to the traditional username and password authentication system. This research study was a precursor to a more exhaustive study related to the perceptions of faculty and students regarding the adoption of biometrics into a learning management system, as plausibility studies are useful to assist researchers in refining an existing theory, such as the technology acceptance model (TAM). The technology acceptance model is a theory that enables stakeholders to determine the perceived ease of use (PEU) and the perceived usefulness (PU) of a technology as an indicator of an individual's behavioral intent to use the technology. In this particular study, the focus was to determine if the perceived value was an additional indicator of behavioral intent. The sample for the study included faculty and students who used an online learning management system on a daily basis as a requirement for employment and enrollment. Data collection was conducted with a sample of 15 faculty and 35 students. he expectation of this study was to show that although the perceived ease of use and the perceived usefulness of a technology are important in the TAM process, it was the perceived value of the technology that had the greatest significance to the participants of the study. The analysis of the findings of this study revealed that the perceived value of a technology is a greater indicator of behavioral intent in conjunction with the TAM's constructs. The final recommendation was to consider a more exhaustive quantitative study that will examine the perceived value as an integral component of the TAM theory.
