Since no specific study to date has investigated or addressed the topic of regaining teacher credibility in the classroom, this thesis proposed a new conceptual model for regaining teacher credibility in the college classroom. By conceptual analysis and concept development, ideas from the past literature were adopted and re-arranged to produce a new conceptual model. The model describes the process as follows: source credibility has three dimensions (i.e., competence, trustworthiness, and caring) and when a misbehavior occurs in the classroom, teachers attempt to regain their damaged/lost credibility in the eyes of their students. This is possible through a series of responses (i.e., defensive and receptive) and actions (i.e., corrective and preventive). Defensive strategies include excuse, justification, and denial, whereas; receptive strategies are apology and concession. This study particularly fills the gap between Image Restoration Theory, and the notion of source credibility in that, it applies concepts from rhetorical image restoration to instructional communication.
