It is estimated that soon, the average smartphone will require Internet connectivity with bandwidth 10.5 times greater than that of existing 4G/LTE (4th Generation/Long-Term Evolution) mobile systems [1]. Now it is recognized that in order to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of mobile applications, future 5G (5th Generation) mobile devices must be able to operate in the currently unused millimeter wave (mmWave) bands. These range from 10 to 300 GHz [2]. The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the spectrum for 5G on 14 July 2016 [3]. This approval includes the 28 GHz and 39 GHz bands. The higher propagation loss at these mmWave frequencies require the development and use of higher gain antenna systems to overcome this loss [4]. The small physical size of antenna elements for 5G will allow the use of multiple antenna arrays on a single cellular device. Even though 5G will be supported in urban areas, it will still be necessary to include 4G/LTE antenna designs for non-urban, less densely populated, and rural communications. This requires including both 5G and 4G/LTE antennas in the same design to cover all situations. The purpose of this research was to develop a solution to cover all situations involved with this problem.
