A museum in today's world that is untouched by modern technology is something that is difficult to imagine. Technology allows museums to stay organized and connected both behind the scenes and with its visitors. Prior to computers, many organizational tasks, such as inventorying a museum's collection, was recorded and organized through methods of handwritten documents and files. This masters thesis explores the first steps taken towards creating a standardization process of documenting museum collections, and how the first foundations of databases came to be and led to what museums use to this day. Furthermore, this paper explores how databases can do more than inventory and document collections, as they allow museums to make information accessible to wider audiences and incorporate other forms of technology, such as touch tablets and mobile apps.
