Citizen science provides scientists the opportunity to use the power of crowdsourcing to collect, classify, and analyze data. For research projects supported by crowdsourcing, effective volunteer engagement often involves more than simply following instructions, it also requires developing skills for tasks such as detecting artifacts in images or transcribing historical records and texts. Very little research dedicated to the implications of and recommendations for successful tutorial design currently exists, yet optimizing tutorial design is an aspect of project development that lends itself well to improving participation outcomes. Digital genre theory was chosen as an analytical framework for this work because of the flexibility in application it provides to the project platform, to the project, and to project artifacts in order to identify and categorize core similarities across crowdsourcing projects. By using genre-specific functionality, citizen science platforms like Zooniverse may help address the perceptions of unreliability that still plague some facets of the scientific community when a crowdsourced project is under review. Since genre-based tools and templates typically involve greater structure and content similarity across projects, this could be seen as advantageous for participants and researchers alike. Comparative content analysis of projects found on Zooniverse, including tutorial design features and use of supporting materials, identified a great deal of uniformity in some respects but surprising variation in others, indicating more emerging rather than established genre. As further evidence of emerging genre, the amount of mentoring the research team received and specific task features of the project appeared to impact tutorial design. Findings in this study suggest that genre theory provides a useful lens for understanding crowd science projects with otherwise disparate characteristics and identifying instances where the digital medium can be deployed more effectively for task instruction. Implications are discussed for designing tools to support effective and efficient tutorial development, including creating standard templates based on task characteristics, providing and prompting inclusion of supporting media based on task complexity and project objectives.
