The Arctic sea ice has undergone significant changes in recent decades that further impact atmospheric conditions and circulation both locally and in the mid-latitudes. This thesis investigates the relationship between the sea ice decline in the Arctic and the contributing atmospheric processes in situ and to the south of the region. The Arctic sea ice decline starts in the fall and early winter. Its initiation is associated with several local and mid-latitude processes, including surface evaporation, surface latent heat flux, surface sensible heat flux, surface thermal radiation budget, two-meter temperature, northward heat flux, northward water vapor flux, and persistent high pressure systems (PMZ) of open ridges and blocking highs. The anomalies of these processes during September foster the Arctic sea ice for later decline, particularly during December in low-ice years. Local processes are more significant for the initiation in September, whereas mid-latitude processes contribute more to the decline in December. The PMZs, amongst the processes, are analyzed statistically in modulating atmospheric circulations and potentially contributing to the sea ice loss. The PMZs occur anomalously more by as much as 4% in September. They occur anomalously at 5.13% in December, higher than the 4% for blocking disclosed in previous studies for that month; the increased frequency is contributed by persistent high pressure ridges.
