Social networking sites (SNSs) have not only changed the way individuals communicate with friends, family and their favorite brands, but they are also changing the way some individuals seek out the fulfillment of attachment needs. John Bowlby's theory of attachment and Horton and Wohl's parasocial theory formed the theoretical foundation of this study. Bowlby asserted that all humans have the distinct need to form strong attachment-based bonds to particular others, and Horton and Wohl presented the concept that an individual may form one-sided relationships with mediated figures, called parasocial relationships (PSRs). These PSRs have the ability to extend to parasocial attachment (PSA) bonds when the celebrity or media figure becomes a source of felt security and safe haven. This study empirically tested (a) whether a PSRs with a favorite celebrity, micro celebrity or media figure formed and/or maintained within SNSs can fulfill attachment functions, thereby evolving to PSA bonds. It also examined (b) the relationship between uses and gratifications, SNSs, and PSA bonds. The results of this study revealed the presence of PSA bonds within SNSs. It also revealed that one's motivation to spend time with SNSs may affect the likelihood of PSA bonds forming. This study provides further insight into the influence of SNSs on the development of relationships and one's identity, the uses and gratifications of engaging with SNSs to form or maintain PSRs, and the ways SNSs may be used to persuade fan behavior and their perspectives on real-life social interactions.
