Despite being a window into romantic relationships, romantic fantasies remain understudied. Most contemporary literature on fantasy either focuses solely on sexual fantasies or conflates sexual and romantic fantasies (see Leitenberg & Henning, 1995 for a review). The current research argues that romantic fantasies exist as a meaningful aspect of romantic relationships, and are unique and distinct from sexual fantasies. Through an ANOVA content validation procedure in Study 1 (n = 69), two fantasy measures were developed to establish three distinct categories of fantasies (sexual, romantic, and sexual-romantic). Study 2a and 2b established discriminant validity and reliability of the fantasy items on both scales through participants' (n = 191 & 192, respectively) responses to a variety of scales predicted to either discriminate or converge with the fantasy scales. Convergent validity was weaker than expected with previous scales in both Study 2a and 2b. Study 3a and 3b (both n = 186) applied the fantasy measures to better understand fantasies of an understudied population, lesbians and gay men, in comparison to heterosexuals. Additionally, Study 3a and 3b assessed whether gender or sexual orientation is predictive of fantasy type and frequency. Results indicated that gender was more predictive of fantasy types and frequency for men, whereas sexual orientation was more predictive of fantasy types and frequency for women. As a whole, men and women's fantasies did not differ in type or frequency to the degree expected. The current research contributes to the field via a new measure of fantasies, by distinguishing romantic fantasies from sexual fantasies, and establishing two new fantasy types: romantic and sexual-romantic fantasies.
