This qualitative exploratory research study focused on the experiences of Latinx community college transfer students preparing to become K-12 teachers. Participants were juniors and seniors at a public university who transferred from local community colleges as aspiring K-12 teachers. The purpose of the study was to better understand how counselors, professors, and support services contributed to transfer student success and the role of hope in their experiences. The 12 aspiring K-12 teachers shared how participation in community college teacher preparation programs offered peer support, preprofessional development, including early fieldwork opportunities, and critical academic and career counseling services. Professors and counselors served as important institutional agents by inspiring, teaching well, empowering through high expectations, supporting and connecting to resources, establishing personal relationships, validating and affirming career choices, creating pathways and educational plans for success, and role modeling. Findings revealed hope was observed across participants' experiences. Participants shared how personal experiences with K-12 teachers shaped their interest in becoming teachers and revealed how they planned to inspire hope in the students they will serve in the future. Findings will inform policymakers and practitioners who want to increase the number of Latinx community college students becoming K-12 teachers on the need for a more defined statewide undergraduate pathway, structured programs at community colleges, and access to faculty and administrators who are equipped to serve as agentes de esperanza [agents of hope].
