Research suggests that Black women may not endorse mainstream beauty ideals, which may protect them from body dissatisfaction and eating pathology. The present study examined the utility of a new measure of beauty ideal internalization to investigate how Black and White women internalize Eurocentric and culturally-specific beauty ideals, as it relates to eating pathology, as well as the role of African American identity vs. other African descent among Black women. Findings revealed that Black women internalize more culturally-specific ideals, while White women internalize more Eurocentric beauty ideals, and that internalization of both ideals are uniquely related to eating pathology in both samples. These findings elucidate how internalization of beauty ideals and related eating pathology differ between Black and White women, as well as highlight the importance of utilizing culturally-specific measures to assess eating pathology in Black women.
