Characterizing the citation-based impact of scientific publications is an important topic in the science of science. When quantifying the citation-based impact of a certain publication, we should first focus on where the node representing this publication is located in the network, and then investigate which publication(s) cites the focal publication to examine how the focal publication impacts other publications. Thus, we need an ego-centered citation network to understand its citation-based impact. The network should at least involve the focal publication and its citing publications. However, these may not be enough-it is also important to investigate the direct citations between citing publications (DCCPs). DCCPs are informative to the focal publication, because they show the paths of knowledge flow within the scope of the focal and citing publications. Thus, we propose the ego-centered citation network (ECCN) that contains two types of edges, direct citating relationships and DCCPs of a certain publication, to understand the citation-based impact of this publication.Based on the whole Web of Science dataset, ECCNs are explored from three different perspectives, namely network structure, network function, and bibliometric indicator. In "network structure," direct citations between citing publications and sub-networks of ECCNs are explored. In "network function," different types of citing publications in ECCNs and author self-citations are analyzed. In "bibliometric indicator," multi-dimensional indicators of characterizing the citation-based impact of publications are proposed. This dissertation research offers implications on research assessment, knowledge creation and diffusion, and scholarly networks/scholarships.
