In the last thirty years, several Mexican writers have published novels that, instead of being located in Mexico, narrate European history, particularly the history of Eurocentric knowledge. In this dissertation, I argue that these texts engage in processes of creating images of European historiographies and epistemologies. I read the thematic foci of these texts as a response to Eurocentric forms of domination and also as a challenge to the expectations of authenticity and exoticism that are frequently imposed on Latin American writers. By reimagining the Enlightenment, the Second World War, and Orientalism, the novels I examine defy a literary order in which European writers functioned as an imperial eye that for centuries has surveyed and shaped Europe's peripheries for European consumption. Thus, these texts critically engage with the Eurocentric systems of knowledge that influenced and gazed at the rest of the world.Although these novels have different themes, they all challenge Eurocentric modes of knowledge production. Jorge Volpi's En busca de Klingsor and Pedro Angel Palou's El dinero del diablo examine the production of scientific and historical knowledge during the Second World War and its aftermath. Francisco Rebolledo' Rasero links the scientific development of the Enlightenment to the technological advances that made wars more destructive in the twentieth century. Mario Bellatin's El jardin de la senora Murakami parodies orientalist narratives to show the failures of Western representations of the East. Focusing on the Eurocentric epistemologies that have constructed and continue to incorporate images of Latin America into Western narratives, my dissertation highlights the capacity of these Mexican writers to resist the critical mandates of depicting their country of origin and, more importantly, to offer a literary intervention in the construction of European histories of knowledge.

520 $a En los ultimos treinta anos, varios escritores mexicanos han publicado novelas que no se ubican en Mexico, sino que narran la historia europea, en particular la historia del conocimiento eurocentrico. En esta disertacion, sostengo que estos textos participan en procesos de creacion de imagenes de historiografias y epistemologias europeas. Interpreto el enfoque tematico de estos textos como una respuesta a las formas de dominacion eurocentricas y tambien como un desafio a las expectativas de autenticidad y exotismo que se imponen con frecuencia a los escritores latinoamericanos. Al reimaginar la Ilustracion, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el orientalismo, las novelas que examino desafian un orden literario en el que los escritores europeos funcionaban como un ojo imperial que durante siglos ha estudiado y configurado las periferias de Europa para el consumo europeo. Asi, estos textos desafian criticamente los sistemas de conocimiento eurocentricos que influyeron y miraron al resto del mundo. Aunque estas novelas tienen diferentes temas, todas desafian los modos de produccion de conocimiento eurocentricos. En busca de Klingsor, de Jorge Volpi, y El dinero del diablo, de Pedro Angel Palou, examinan la produccion de conocimiento cientifico e historico durante y despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Rasero, de Francisco Rebolledo, vincula el desarrollo cientifico de la Ilustracion con los avances tecnologicos que hicieron que las guerras fueran mas destructivas en el siglo XX. El jardin de la senora Murakami, de Mario Bellatin, parodia narraciones orientalistas para mostrar los fracasos de las representaciones occidentales de Oriente. Centrandome en las epistemologias eurocentricas que han construido y continuan incorporando imagenes de America Latina en las narrativas occidentales, mi disertacion destaca la capacidad de estos escritores mexicanos para resistir los mandatos criticos de representar su pais de origen y, lo que es mas importante, ofrecer una intervencion literaria en la construccion de las historias europeas del conocimiento.
