Bald cypress is a dominant tree species in many wetlands in southeastern US, growing in both seasonally and perennially inundated wetlands. Studies of bald cypress growth relative to water depth or hydro-period have yielded equivocal results. Some have documented a curious correlation between radial growth and precipitation, including trees growing in saturated soils where water availability is not a growth-limiting factor. It has been speculated that the correlation may be related to an increase in the downward flux of oxygen through the root zone when rains raise the water level in a wetland. The current study was designed to explore this possibility in a wetland surrounding Sky Lake, Mississippi. The wetland is perched above the regional aquifer, with the potential for downward flux of oxygenated water as wetland waterlevels rise. Though the fine-grained oxbow-lake sediments generally serve as a hydraulic plug, heterogeneity due to buried, decomposing limbs may provide preferential flow pathways for the delivery of oxygenated water. Two measures of bald cypress productivity were studied over several growing seasons to correlate with water depth: NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, a spectrally-derived indicator of plant productivity) and sap flow velocity (an estimate for transpiration rates). Redox potential measurements in the wetland soil served as a proxy for oxygen concentration during one growing season. Results of the redox potential measurements were consistent with the hypothesis of isolated preferential flow pathways, but both the NDVI and the sap flow measurements documented a downward trend in tree productivity with increasing water depth for each of the years under observation. Oxygenation of isolated zones in the soil was not sufficient to offset the general negative impact on growth associated with higher water levels.
