Topic 1. Neural networks retrievals of harmful algal blooms in West Florida Shelf and effects of temporal variations: Neural Networks (NNs) are applied to the detection and delineation of Karenia brevis Harmful Algal Blooms (KB HABs) that plague the coasts of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite observations. Previous approaches for KB HABs retrievals primarily used remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) signal at the 678, fluorescence band, from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite. VIIRS, which has replaced MODIS, unfortunately has no 678 nm fluorescence channel. To make up for the absence of a fluorescence channel on VIIRS, the NN approach was customized to retrieve phytoplankton absorption at 443 nm (aph443) using R rs measurements from existing VIIRS channels at 486, 551 and 671 nm. The aph443 values in the retrieved VIIRS images can in turn be correlated to chlorophyll-a concentrations and hence KB cell counts. VIIRS retrievals using NNs and 6 other algorithms were compared against all available near coincident in-situ measurements over the 2012-2016 period. Analysis of retrieval statistics showed that the highest accuracies were obtained with NN compared to all other retrieval algorithms. NN retrievals also show the highest correlations and lowest errors when matched against fluorescence based retrievals techniques using MODIS satellite. The analysis highlighted and confirmed the impact of temporal and spatial variabilities on retrieval accuracies. Topic 2. Investigation of the relationship between algal fluorescence and the polarization properties of the underwater light field: Theoretical relationships between algae fluorescence and reduction in polarization of the oceanic underwater light field have been evolved and evaluated to retrieve fluorescence magnitude. A vector radiative transfer code for the coupled atmosphere-ocean system, using measured inherent optical properties for a variety of oligotrophic and eutrophic waters as inputs, was used to simulate the underwater light field. These simulations were then compared with field data using a multi-angular hyperspectral polarimeter. These confirmed the theoretical relationship and the feasibility of determining fluorescence from polarization measurements.
