Using an intercultural framework to gain new insights into the contextual representation of global Christian faith, this dissertation conducts a study of art and visual culture emerged from the encounter of Christianity and Asia. Located within the contemporary Asian context, Taiwan in particular, this study engages Christian images produced by home-grown artists, recognizing the need of local Christian communities for a dialogical conversion from merely adapting Western stylistic expressions to creating new indigenous narratives. These artworks can be better perceived as new products emerging from cultural mediations that crosses borders and risks encounters between gospel and context, thereby breaking new ground on articulating the negotiation of Christian faith within its Asian setting. The first part of the dissertation elucidates the nature, discourse, and method of study art and mission in Asia (Chapter One), exemplified in the works of Sadao Watanabe in Japan, Solomon Raj in India, and He Qi in China (Chapter Two), along with mission objects during the early twentieth century of China and Taiwan (Chapter Three). The second part engages Christian art by five contemporary Taiwanese artists: Etan Pavavalung and Cheng Chien-Chung (Chapter Four), Wang Jen-Wen and Chris Chou (Chapter Five), and Stanley Fung (Chapter Six), and their uses of visual strategies of symbols, metaphor, and allegory for mission as prophetic dialogue. The commitment of Asian Christian artists to reinterpret Christian identity brings a new appreciation to the transformative dimension of a lived Christian faith not only for Asia, but also for a global world, affirming that God is present in the vital relationship between art and mission.
