There is still much to discover when it comes to gay men and aging. Most of the existing research has focused on Baby Boomers and their social networks but little is known about the cohorts of gay men who came after them. This study examines the perceived social support between two cohorts: Baby Boomers and Millennials. Variables of interest were plans for getting married or having children, their identification with the gay community, and perceptions of support. An online survey was conducted that resulted in the participation of 46 Baby Boomers and 42 Millennials from the San Francisco bay area. Results failed to show differences neither between the two groups when it came to their perceived social support between their friends, family, and significant others, nor with their identification with the gay community. A higher percentage of gay Millennials planned to get married and have children compared to gay Baby Boomers. When anticipating future support in old age, the men listed their partners, followed by gay friends, then family, then straight friends, with some men anticipating no instrumental support, followed lastly by children. Most of the men are in relationships with just fewer than half being in "open" relationships, having partners of a different ethnicity, and cohabitating with their partners. Findings such as these that consider the specific needs of gay men offer important insight into their social support systems for all providers, elucidating the specific patterns of support and partnerships which can help in training clinicians when working with this population.
