The roles of a Christian school athletic coach are diverse and multifaceted. Christian school coaches have many responsibilities, but effective and intentional mentoring of their players should be expected by Christian school athletic programs. The mentoring component of coaching has the capacity to transform lives. This dissertation analyzed, from a qualitative perspective, the key traits possessed by four coaches who were identified as intentional and effective mentors to their players. A grounded theory research design, including triangulation, was used as this researcher conducted interviews with athletic directors and/or administrators, former student-athletes, and four coaches. The coaches were also observed in game and practice action. Patterns, themes, and common practices of intentional mentorship practices with these coaches were identified through these interviews and observations, and seven conclusions were drawn. Key findings include: coaches who are intentional mentors have a call to coach, they treat their players with dignity and respect, and they care for their players beyond the sport. The results can be used to help train Christian school coaches to effectively develop mentoring relationships with their players.
