Numerous studies have been conducted focusing on formal leaders in sport; however, few have focused on the roles of informal leaders. This study explores the relationship between collegiate football players' individual motivation styles and their preferred peer leaders' leadership styles. It was hypothesized that those players who identified as being more intrinsically motivated, would be more likely to choose leaders who were strong in the Democratic Behavior and Training and Instruction leadership dimensions, while those who identified as being extrinsically motivated would choose leaders strong in the Social Support and Positive Feedback leadership dimensions. Participants included 28 male division III collegiate football players. Individual participants completed the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) in order to be classified as having a particular motivation type. Then participants identified the three players on their team that they viewed as the "best" leaders and rated those leaders on the Revised Leadership Scale for Sports (RLSS). Pearson's Correlation showed no significant results to support the hypotheses. Post hoc analyses found that the leaders ranked the highest had the highest scores on the Positive Feedback leadership dimension. These findings suggest that future research in this area is needed to better understand the relationship between motivation type and preferred leadership style.
