The researcher interviewed 10 marriage and family therapists (MFTs) who practice yoga as a primary form of self-care. There is scant literature offering non-specific information about the healing benefits and clinical implications of self-care. The lived experiences of these 10 individuals provided insight into the ways in which yoga is healing and protective against stress-related conditions, such as compassion fatigue and burnout. In employing Moustakas' (1994) qualitative approach of transcendental phenomenology, four essential themes emerged: (a) Practicing yoga develops compassion for self and others; (b) Yoga helps me clinically; (c) Yoga is physically healing, and (d) Self-care is important for MFTs, and the lack of conversation around self-care has health consequences. The researcher viewed the dialogue of the participants through the lens of collaborative language systems; this lens allowed for the creation of space within the conversations and a thorough examination of biases on the part of the researcher. MFT implications: specified compassion fatigue and burnout strategies inspired by the data, clinical implications of yoga interventions, ways to incorporate yoga practice into therapeutic work, and systemic conversation about self-care.
