The objective of this study is to answer the main research question: How do administrators' perceptions of adjunct faculty's impact on student retention, quality of instruction, and student affordability, affect administrators' decision-making on these issues? How administrators at institutions of higher learning view adjunct faculty may determine how they utilize them. Adjunct faculty are now playing a greater role than they ever have before in higher education, especially in institutional delivery. Two-thirds of faculty are nontenured, and half of the part-time adjunct faculty have several teaching jobs or day jobs in the industry. The intent of this study is based on the need to understand the process of perception formation by administrators and the consequences of their perceptions on the educational administrators' decision-making process. The research methodology used in this study was the basic qualitative research design. The data for this study were collected through a semistructured questionnaire and follow-up phone interviews. The target population of this study was all the higher educational administrators and financial administrators in the United States. The participants in this sample consisted of two academic administrators and one financial administrator from a higher education institution located in the Southern region of the United States. After the questionnaires were received, the data were transcribed, organized, and coded. Follow-up phone interviews were conducted to further investigate the full meaning of the coded data as well as to probe the administrators for further thoughts on adjunct faculty as they related to this study. The findings of this study showed that all the administrators had positive perceptions about adjunct faculty and their impact on student retention. Educational administrators would tend to utilize adjunct faculty to maintain or increase student retention. All the educational administrators had positive perceptions about adjunct faculty and their impact on quality of instruction delivered. Educational administrators would tend to utilize adjunct faculty to maintain or manage quality of instruction delivered. Two of the three participants who were academic officers, who had neutral perceptions about adjunct faculty, felt that adjunct faculty had no impact on student affordability and would not utilize adjunct faculty to maintain or increase student affordability. One educational administrator, who was a financial officer, had positive perceptions about the impact adjunct faculty had on student affordability and would utilize adjunct faculty to maintain or increase student affordability.
