The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which formerly homeless heads of households explained their experiences of homelessness. The objective was to learn about and better understand the problem of homelessness by obtaining the narratives of formerly homeless heads of households. The findings address a gap in the scientific literature on the factors leading to homelessness by identifying themes from the accounts of former heads of households who had become homeless. The goal of the study was to answer the research question: "How do former homeless heads of households describe the experience of being homeless?" A generic, qualitative methodology was the most suitable approach to explore the subjective opinions of the participants and present an in-depth account of the issue from the perspectives of formerly homeless heads of households. A purposive sampling strategy was employed to identify and interview formerly homeless individuals. The study involved face-to-face interviews with 10 formerly homeless heads of households who had not been homeless in the last year and who were 18 years of age and older. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and examined by the researcher. Braun and Clarke's (2006) 6-step thematic analysis was implemented to organize and analyze the collected data. Seven themes emerged from the analysis of the data. The results were consistent with literature exploring the experiences of individuals who are homeless. Results showed that family backgrounds, feelings, trust, and bonds impacted the participants' lives and changes in their behaviors and views. The results also reinforced the importance of understanding (a) the experiences of members of this population to set aside fear and shame and ask for help; (b) their need to socialize; and (c) their need to learn to care for and love themselves; and (d) the value, meaning, and significance of resources to accomplish the transition out of homelessness. Recommendations for further study include using a mixed methods approach, a larger sample, and focus groups of formerly homeless individuals. Having increased knowledge of the problems and needs of individuals who have become homeless might lead to the development of more effective methods to prevent homelessness. It is anticipated that the findings will add value to the extant literature and will be accepted by professionals and others interested in improving the conditions of homelessness.
