Social work professionals are known to experience or feel stress within the workplace. The purpose of this study on stress management within the social work profession was to gain a deeper understanding of workplace stress and help empower social workers to manage their stress through the creation of a stress management tool. There were two research questions identified in the study, they were (a) Does the social worker's knowledge of stress contribute to the level of workplace stress experienced? and (b)When social workers implement individual stress management interventions was there a decrease in workplace stress? The design of the research study was an action-based study with a generic qualitative inquiry approach to collect and analyze the data. The study used purposeful sampling, with the specific method of snowballing, that obtained a sample of social work professionals to take part in individual interviews and a focus group. The sample included a total of 10 social work professionals that were over the age of 18, held a bachelor's or master's degree in social work, and had been working within the social work profession for a least six months. The individual interviews and focus group were designed to address the research questions by obtaining the participant's thoughts and opinions of their experiences of workplace stress through personal narratives. The findings of the study concluded that there were five categories that contributed to workplace stress. The categories were lack of resources, lack of training, negative perception, taking time off, and social workers not equipped. The results of this study confirmed that there was workplace stress in this profession, which was based on five different categories with emerging themes identified. Based on these themes, the action phase of the data collection process was completed by the focus group and their development of a stress management tool. The results of the study presented an understanding that social workers were aware of their workplace stressors and how to manage them, but the various factors that cause stress need to be addressed on a higher level within organizational management and by city and state officials. This study offered a deeper understanding of the current body of knowledge and brings light to the ongoing workplace issues that social workers face.
