Understanding the impact of culture on suicide allows for a better assessment of suicide risk. Research has found numerous ethnic cultural factors that impact suicide risk, including family relationships, sense of belonging, perceived burdensomeness, and one's view of their "self". In this study, a qualitative analysis of suicide assessments with adolescents was conducted to explore the extent to which cultural factors of suicide risk are present and to highlight factors that appear to be inconsistent or undocumented in the literature. This study presents a new framework of suicide assessment to include cultural factors of suicide risk using an interpersonal and intrapersonal model for suicide risk assessment. The findings of this study indicated that family related factors of suicide assessment were indicated to be the most prevalent risk factor and protective factors among all cultural groups. Additionally, this study indicated numerous suicide risk factors and protective factors that are specific to Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and European Americans, while also finding shared suicide risk factors between these ethnic cultural groups.
