This dissertation will attempt to demonstrate that a balanced doctrine of revelation should view Scripture as unerringly normative and the Spirit as dynamically active through conducting a theological critique of Karl Barth's primarily personal doctrine of revelation and Carl Henry's primarily propositional doctrine of revelation. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to contemporary conversations of the doctrine of revelation followed by giving a rationale for making Barth and Henry two interlocutors worthy of this examination. Chapter 2 establishes some interpretive parameters for Barth by tracing Barth's theological development and interacting with current Barthian scholarship. One essential conversation in Barthian scholarship with which we must engage is determining to what extent Barth's theology underwent transition throughout his career. Chapter 3 examines Barth's own doctrine of revelation through an investigation of his exposition of the doctrine found primarily in Church Dogmatics . We seek to understand Barth's view of the means and the content of revelation, particularly as it involves personalism. Chapter 4 introduces Carl Henry's theological development though a brief examination of his biography. Then his doctrine of revelation is explored primarily through examining his development of the doctrine in God, Revelation and Authority. Methodologically, we attempt to locate Henry's largely apologetic argument into systematic categories, providing a means toward critique in the following chapter. Chapter 5 critiques both Barth's view of personalism and Henry's view of propositionalism from a trinitarian framework. The chapter intends to demonstrate the problems that result from losing the proper balance between Word and Spirit. Chapter 6 seeks to address the critiques in the previous chapter through interacting with the doctrine of the Trinity as foundational to a doctrine of revelation that maintains a balance of the Word and Spirit. Chapter 7 briefly rehearses the argument, concluding with some theological implications that develop from the discussion that has ensued. Primarily, these theological implications focus upon the role of the Bible within the life of the church.
