The topic of this study was small medium business (SMB) information security intention (IINT) to protect against cyberthreat. The research problem being that SMBs lack cyberthreat awareness and IINT to protect against cyberthreats. The purpose of research was to implement a post-test quantitative online field experiment using protection motivation theory (PMT) research framework to determine if there was any difference in IINT between randomly assigned groups of SMB owner / manager participants to fear appeals messages considering SMBs lack financial resources and technical expertise. There was a total of 72 SMB decision maker participants randomly assigned to fear appeals treatment groups with 26 assigned to a video treatment, 21 to a written treatment, and 25 to a control group. Fear appeals were based on scholarly literature and a scenario-based Likert scale survey instrument was adapted from a previous study to collect data. The survey instrument was pilot tested for validity and reviewed by information security experts for content validity with fear appeals. The data was analyzed for between group differences using both ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test of independent samples. The results indicate a failure to reject the null hypothesis for all PMT factors with no significant difference between fear appeals groups that would explain any variance in SMB decision maker IINT. This implies that fear appeals messages used in this study may not influence SMB decision makers IINT. Future experimental research in the SMB population should focus on developing effective and realistic fear appeals or segments of the SMB population.
