This study examines whether the presence of specialized vocabulary (jargon) has an impact on students' ability to understand and comprehend new concepts in a real-world environment. A ten-question survey was distributed in two forms (jargon and plain language) and was used to determine the correlation between these variables. Participants were randomly selected to complete one of the surveys through the University of Toledo directory and invited to participant in the survey on through social media. A total of 57 participants' answers were included in the study and analyzed to determine if there was an impact of jargon on understanding and/or self-assessment of understanding. Results showed that there was a significant correlation between presence of jargon and self-assessment of participants: those who completed the jargon survey were more likely to assess their understanding as limited, while those who took the plain language survey in general felt confident about their understanding. A slight correlation was also found between presence of jargon and the ability to correctly answer comprehension questions. No correlation was found between participants with previous zip line experience and those who indicated they had no experience.
