A limited number of prior studies have attempted to address the use of humor in the workplace, yet little attention has been given to the personal experience of those who instigate workplace humor. This study explored how individuals use humor in the course of their daily job routines through the theory of planned behavior. A case study methodology followed the experience of eight individuals who were employed full-time and ranged from ages of 32 to 65. Participants who self-identified as regular users of workplace humor responded to seven open-ended questions related to their use of workplace humor. Three themes emerged from the data analysis regarding the meaning, purpose, and best and worst uses of job-related humor. Workplace humor was found to help build team cohesion and lower job stress, which supported findings in the literature. In addition, the findings suggested externalities noted in the theory of planned behavior played a role in whether the participants chose to use humor in the workplace. Future work should consider studying office humor by profession, gender, race, and/or socioeconomic status.
