Global organizations are expanding business operations to cover diverse physical and temporal regions. To optimize performance in a global environment, organizations may use virtual teams to bridge geographic and temporal spans between locations. Virtual teams may focus on a project or be used to support operations in functional business units, such as information technology. The researcher explored factors that may influence the effectiveness of virtual teams and how virtual team managers managed or mitigated those issues. The primary research question for this study was "How are virtual team managers managing the effectiveness of their virtual teams?" Additionally, six subquestions were explored: how virtual team managers manage time zone issues, language issues, cultural issues, a lack of cooperation with the team, rewarding good performance, and measures implemented for poor performance. An exploratory qualitative inquiry was used to study the population of virtual team managers since they are directly responsible for the effectiveness of virtual teams. The sample consisted of 15 virtual team managers from Fortune 500 companies who had a minimum of 5 years of experience in managing virtual teams. In-depth interviews were analyzed using an inductive analysis, which is a form of thematic analysis. From an analysis of responses to the primary research question emerged the themes of the utilization of technology and technology-driven tools, the embracing of the inherent nature of virtual teams, and the lack of differences in training virtual and colocated team members. Analysis of responses to the research subquestions revealed the following themes: flexibility among managers and team members, the embracing of cultural differences to strengthen the team and provide different points of view, the handling of performance issues one-on-one in a private setting, and the lack of difference in how issues are handled in a virtual and colocated setting. For practitioners, these results indicate that to improve the effectiveness of virtual teams, team managers should exercise flexibility in scheduling between team members, strive to have a better understanding of the cultures represented on a virtual team, and implement a blend of colocated and virtual management practices. IT professionals should be aware of the critical role that IT plays when it provides training on technologies utilized by virtual teams.
