Data breaches affecting medical facilities have been plaguing the medical industry. The purpose of this research is to investigate reports of data breaches in medical facilities. Research performed gathered information on technology that is being used in medical facilities, procedures that are set in place for technology in medical facilities, and practices that can lead to increased odds of a data breaches.Research found that in medical facilities the use of outdated technology is still being used. Despite the known vulnerabilities that are linked to outdated technology such as fax machines, or outdated operating systems like Windows XP, medical facilities are still using this technology. The use of modern technology is not without risks for medical facilities. The use of personal devices such as cell phones are putting patient information at risk for accidental or malicious data breaches.Recommendations for preventing data breaches in medical facilities included updating outdated technology with modern solutions. Services like FaxFinder offer a safe way of a faxing service. Removal of devices using Windows XP or updated devices to a supported and current operating system. Addressing the issue of physicians using personal devices for patient information would need to be eliminated. Complying with regulations set by Health Insurance Portability Act would offer regulatory practices for preventing patient information from being stored, transmitted incorrectly, or stolen maliciously. Medical facilities contain a lot of crucial information about patients and heading these recommendations will improve the security of patient information.
