The purpose of this study was to identify nutrition patterns associated with two distinct presentations of childhood dental caries. The study sample comprised of 106 patients: 23 patients with early childhood caries (ECC) aged 1 to 4, 30 patients with only posterior proximal caries lesions aged 4-12, and 53 age-, gender- and payment method-matched caries-free controls. Participants were enrolled between July 2018 and March 2019 and underwent a dental examination after their guardian completed a 23-item nutrition questionnaire. Consumption frequencies of 18 dietary items were compared between cases and controls using bivariate association testing and factor analysis. Both disease subtypes, ECC and posterior proximal lesions were associated with high frequency of cariogenic liquids (e.g., fruit juice and soda). Caries-free controls reported higher frequency of cereal/granola bars in 1-4 age group and chewing gum in 4-12 age group. These results affirm the role of cariogenic liquids in childhood caries development.
