Objectives: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the effects of Vinyasa and Hatha yoga on motor disability and balance using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale - Motor Score and Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test in patients with mild to moderate stage PD. Methods: Studies were analyzed to explore the effects of the yoga interventions compared to no physical intervention or education program on motor disability and balance in the mild to moderate PD population. Studies were analyzed to determine treatment effect size and homogeneity of the studies. Results: Three studies were included in this meta-analysis. A large effect size was found in favor of the yoga intervention for improving motor disability. A moderate treatment effect size was found in favor of the yoga intervention for improving balance. A sub-analysis was performed to compare yoga styles on motor disability resulting in a larger treatment effect with Vinyasa yoga. Conclusion: This meta-analysis concluded that yoga practice improves motor disability and balance in individuals with mild to moderate PD, however should be taken with caution due to validity concerns and limitations noted. Study Design: This paper is a meta-analysis of randomized control trials to determine the effects of yoga practice to improve motor disability and balance in patients with mild to moderate PD.
