The focus of this study was to explore the use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) by the older adult population. The research was guided by the research question: What is the process of adopting the use of complementary and alternative medicines by older adults? The methodology used for this study was grounded theory. This methodology was chosen in order to explain the process older adult experience when choosing to adopt the use of CAMs. A total of eight individuals participated in the study. The individuals' ages ranged between 66 and 78 years old and each used CAMs. The goal of the study was to generate a theory that described the process older adults' experiences in choosing to use CAMs. The data was collected using face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The emergent theory identified the journey towards the participants' use of CAMs. The findings from this study will add to the knowledge base of continuing to gain insight to the importance of wellness as it relates to the older adult population. This will also offer to assist health professionals, and behavioral professionals to the growing needs of the older adult population.
