This paper examines natural speech in Mandarin as a study target under the framework of prosodic phonology. In addition, this paper employs statistical analyses which provide further evidence that strengthens the analysis and conclusions. This dissertation explores the prosodic domains and hierarchies in Mandarin Chinese, and three domains are the focus of the discussion: prosodic word, clitic group, and intonation phrase. The third tone sandhi rule and the neutral tone sandhi rule are used to determine the prosodic domains. This dissertation proves that in Mandarin Chinese, the prosodic domain formation refers to the information of syntactic units. However evidence has proven that the third tone sandhi formation does not refer to information of syntactic relations, or syntactic categories. This dissertation also proves that function words that have long been treated as clitics, such as the comparative marker bi, and the light verb ba, are not clitics. Unlike the uniformed performance of clitics, the function words behave differently when belonging to different prosodic domains. The semantic and pragmatic information impact the behavior of function words. The acoustic analysis provides evidence to this argument. The result supports the prosodic hierarchy model in Mandarin Chinese proposed by Zhang (2014 and 2017), that different prosodic domains can jointly generate the output. In sum, this dissertation explains the rule of third tone sandhi formation and the domain the neutral tone sandhi applies at different prosodic hierarchies from the perspective of prosodic phonology. It proves that Mandarin Chinese is not sensitive to the information of syntactic categories or syntactic relations. However, it refers to the information of syntactic unit. This paper also clarifies the properties of function words and the prosodic hierarchy in which they belong. It provides a further understanding of the phonological behaviors of tones in Mandarin Chinese and the evidence of the joint effort of the pragmatic and semantic related hierarchy level and morpho-syntactic related level.
