This study examined the frequencies to which callers of suicide prevention lines endorsed specific risk factors, and the overall risk level of callers based on these frequencies. That is, this study sought to determine the likelihood that any one caller to a suicide prevention line, at any given time, will be at either a low, moderate, or high risk of suicide. Further, the degree to which these factors were most often reported was also examined, in order to frame a profile of a typical caller of suicide prevention lines. Participants (N = 13,713) were callers to the Central Valley Suicide Prevention Hotline within the year of 2015, who reported being in suicidal crises and talked to, and were assessed for suicidal risk by, counselors on the line. In the present study, the following hypotheses were made with suicidal capability, suicidal desire, and suicidal intent in mind: 1) In terms of capability, the majority of callers will report a high level of anxiety. 2) In terms of capability, the majority of callers will report having lost someone significant to suicide (indicating a high level of capability). 3) In terms of desire, the majority of callers will report a high level of feeling trapped. 4) In terms of desire, the majority of callers will report a high level of hopelessness. 5) In terms of intent, the majority of callers will report a moderate level. 6) In terms of intent, the majority of callers will report a moderate extent of suicide plans (some specific details, with a plan to attempt in the near future). Generally, hypotheses were not supported by the data. The present study indicated that a greater number of callers tend to fall in the low to moderate risk level for suicide, as opposed to high risk. While these results did not generally support the hypotheses, they indicated other important issues to consider. The findings suggested callers of suicide prevention lines may be those who are more open to intervention and likely to attempt, rather than complete, suicide. The findings further suggested that those who are at higher risk for suicide may not be able to make a call, or have made up their minds and do not want to receive help. Implications of the results, limitations, and recommendations for future research were discussed.
