In this dissertation, I use cognitive linguistics to analyze the metaphors we use for translation and propose that we change the metaphors we use to be centered in the body of the translator, primarily the metaphor of cannibalism, in order to both more effectively represent other cultures and more accurately recognize the way we communicate. After detailing the history of translation theory and its relevance to the field of theatre, along with the changes I recommend, I use three case studies to demonstrate ways in which I applied body-based techniques in the translation and production of three plays by contemporary Sao Paulo playwright Lucienne Guedes Fahrer. These techniques include echo translation, third party performance styles, and the preservation of kinesthetic image schema. Through this analysis and demonstration, I provide tools to both translators and theatre artists to help them to recognize the inner workings of other cultures and attempt to nourish their audiences with that knowledge.
