In three papers, this research discusses the roles of a grassroots organization and a community-university partnership in embracing the community-identified goals of promoting behavior change for environmental sustainability. Building on the partnership between The Natural Step Monona (TNS Monona) and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the papers demonstrate three important areas of inquiry: the impacts of the partnership on the organization and its constituents, the performance of the organization in engaging their constituents, and the implementation of different kinds of civic engagement approaches. The Focus #1 paper shows that the partnership offered concrete benefits to TNS Monona and its constituents. However, it also uncovers TNS Monona's level of involvement in the partnership declining over time due to "partnership fatigue." The Focus #2 paper demonstrates how civic environmentalism focused on behavior change made a difference in the community. In particular, the paper shows that moving beyond awareness raising or education and focusing on practical actions can encourage people to engage in wide-ranging behavior change. Lastly, the Focus #3 paper shows the complementary nature of individual, family/household, and group civic engagement strategies in Monona. The improved practical experiences on sustainability practices equipped family members and encouraged them to collaborate with other Mononans in more prominent projects sponsored by community organizations. The three papers collectively demonstrate the value of grassroots civic environmentalism as organized by TNS Monona. Commitment to collective behavior change, if carefully facilitated through the organization of a civic engagement program, can make a concrete difference. The adoption of community organizing principles allows the collective engagement for behavior change to progress. In addition, not only did the partnership help assess the impacts of TNS Monona behavior change initiatives (the individual and family/household approaches), but also the partnership leveraged the assessment for expanding the behavior change initiatives to the level where broader practical actions took place in Monona.
