The world is inherently dynamic. Forces reshape ecosystems on daily-to-geologic time scales. This environmental variability includes natural forces, like hurricanes or fluctuations in temperature, as well as anthropogenic influences, such as oil spills. However, much of ecological theory focuses on studying long-term equilibrium dynamics. Despite recent attempts to better understand environmental variability, there is still a dearth of research on how exactly variability affects both ecological and evolutionary dynamics. This is particularly true with regard to seasonal variability or variability caused by rare, large-impact events. This lack of understanding hampers our ability to manage populations in an increasingly variable and uncertain world. I examine the role of environmental variability through three different scientific questions and approaches. First, I review the role seasonality plays in ecological dynamics. I point out why we still have a limited understanding of seasonality from both an empirical and mathematical perspective. Second, I build a set of models to study how environmental variability can affect the evolutionary dynamics. Specifically, I study how variability in spring timing can select for reproductive timing in small mammals. Last, I examine how environmental variability, in the form of catastrophes, can affect our population management choices. As a case study, I look at how designs of marine protected area networks differ when accounting for these catastrophes.
