Healthcare has faced many questions about addressing the opioid epidemic. With the #ChoosePT campaign, physical therapists have inserted themselves into the conversation as an appropriate choice for treating conditions that would otherwise use opioid prescriptions. In order to understand this concept in more depth, physical therapists are interviewed about their experiences treating and communicating about chronic pain with patients and physicians to answer research questions that expand research in multidisciplinary care and patient-provider communication. The ecological model of communication in medical encounters serves as a guiding framework. The results provide depth and understanding into the discourse surrounding the care of chronic pain and addressing opioid misuse from the perspective of multidisciplinary care and patient-provider communication.
