The term Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is an extrapolation from the term Third Culture coined by sociologist Ruth Hill Useem to describe children who live with their parents outside of their parents' culture and follow their parents to various international employment posts. They comprise a third culture of children who are not fully identified with either their parents' cultures or their host cultures. TCKs are typically raised in a mobile environment whereby the people in their lives come and go, creating an ever-changing circle of friends. This study explored the relationship between friendship quality and psychological adjustment among TCKs in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a global city with a large population of TCKs. Although there is growing research interest in the identity and enculturation of TCKs, few studies have explored the impact of friendship quality on psychological adjustment in this population. Participants were a convenience sample of 102 TCKs residing in Hong Kong and attending international schools. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to measure depression, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the McGill Friendship Questionnaire which yields a Friendship Quality score (MFQ), and open-ended items regarding their friendship experiences as a TCK. Results showed the MFQ Friendship Quality scale was significantly positively associated with self-esteem (RSES) and negatively associated with depression (PHQ-9). Significant relationships between depression and self-esteem and permanent residency status, length of residence in Hong Kong, country considered home and country of residence of best friend (Hong Kong or elsewhere) were found. Hierarchical multiple regressions established that length of residence in Hong Kong, friendship quality and perceived social support from family predicted depression and self-esteem. Thematic analyses of the comments yielded 6 main themes: Friendship Loss (due to international mobility), Multicultural Diversity, Shared Connections, Positive Friendship Experiences, Turbulent Friendship Experiences, and Quantity versus Intimacy. This research highlights that TCK status is associated with both resilience and risk factors, and that stability of residency, integrity of friendships and perceived social support from family are key factors.
