Suicide is a critical worldwide public health issue. Mental health professionals play an important front-line role in providing services to individuals at risk. Existing research shows that professionals' self-efficacy in the management of suicidality and their attitudes towards suicide may be associated with better treatment outcomes. However, it is not known how such attributes develop across the process of professional training and in different mental health professions. This study explored suicide-specific training experiences, perceived competence in the assessment and management of suicidality, attitudes towards suicide and predictors of perceived competence among mental health trainees and professionals in Hong Kong. A convenience sample of 148 mental health trainees (n = 72) and professionals (n = 76) across three professional disciplines: social work, counseling/counseling psychology, and clinical psychology, completed the Hong Kong version of the Chinese Attitude Toward Suicide Questionnaire (CASQ-HK; Lee et al., 2007), and the Perceived Competence in Suicide Assessment and Management Questionnaire (PCSAMQ). The PCSAMQ was created for this study and evaluates exposure to suicidality in clinical work, suicide-specific training, and has five domains of perceived competence: risk assessment, intervention, professional collaboration, knowledge and theory, and management of feelings. ANOVAS were performed to evaluate the effects of trainee versus professional status and professional discipline. Findings showed that professionals had more exposure to suicide in clinical work than trainees, and that social workers had more professional exposure to suicide but less suicide-specific training than counselors/counseling psychologists or clinical psychologists. No significant differences between trainees and professionals were found regarding attitudes towards suicide and its treatment. Professionals endorsed significantly higher perceived competence than trainees across all domains. Clinical psychologists reported significantly higher perceived competence than social workers and counselors/counseling psychologists. A hierarchical multiple regression identified seven significant predictors of perceived competence: having received suicide-specific training, having had clients die by suicide, having worked with severely suicidal clients, professional (relative to trainee) status, being a clinical psychologist (relative to social worker or counselor/counseling psychologist), and endorsing less stigma and fewer fatalistic beliefs regarding the preventability of suicide. Practical training and support for mental health trainees and professionals are proposed.
