The purpose of this study was to obtain numerical data from the Missouri Vital Statistics, 1990-1994, and to analyze county-by-county the incidence of abnormal births to determine if northeast Missouri (Adair, Knox, Schuyler, Scotland, and Sullivan counties) had significantly more birth defects than the rest of the state. This study provided statistical evidence that the frequency of abnormal births was not homogeneous throughout the state of Missouri. Chi-square calculations for 1990-1994 revealed a significant difference to exist in the proportion of abnormal births as distributed among the 114 counties in Missouri. While the data showed significant abnormal birth patterns for the years 1990 through 1994, the data in itself cannot explain the possible causes of the abnormal births as distributed among the 114 counties in Missouri.
