Transformational Development (TD) is a distinctly Christian and holistic method of development that goes further than most other development programs. Whereas many development projects only focus on material improvement for the poor, TD seeks to provide positive change for the whole of human life materially, socially, psychologically and spiritually. Yet very few scholarly studies have examined the actual effects of TD upon the participants. TD theory provides a robust paradigm for transformation that includes the spiritual, social, material, and psychological components. Several authors have described what transformation should look like but there is a scarcity of research depicting the impacts as perceived by TD participants. This research describes the outcomes and impacts of TD upon Cambodian participants. I performed open-ended semi-structured interviews with 52 participants in 6 different projects to understand the impact of these projects on their lives. The central understanding of this study is that the impact of TD ranges on a continuum from resistance to openness toward socio-economic and spiritual changes. Four categories of responses to TD emerged from the data. They are transformed, resourced, redeemed, and unchanged. Participants' interview responses form and shape each outcome and describe 8 different dimensions of impact. These dimensions of impact include material, spiritual, educational, psychological, social, community, empowerment, and hope. This study gives voice to TD project participants and allows them to describe their perceptions of change brought to their community, their families, and to themselves as individuals by various projects. Understanding how local Cambodians perceive the impact of TD projects will provide TD indicators that other practitioners may find useful in measuring their success. This study contributes to the small body of literature that is dedicated to transformation development and its outcomes. This grounded theory contributes a rich and deep portrayal of TD outcomes that informs theory as well as practice.
