Learners' self-direction is widely studied for decades with measuring instruments developed to assess learners' readiness for self-directed learning. Without a clear understanding of the students' self-directed learning abilities, instructors would find difficulties in providing the necessary guidance and support needed to develop self-directed learning skills among the students. With video learning platforms becoming more pertinent in the education landscape, learners are referring to online instructions as a means for self-directed learning. Online video instructions are easily accessible, engaging and are able to present complex information using multimedia allowing learners to learn on their own at their own pace. It is crucial that students are able to maximise the potential of the video platform to engage in self-directed learning activities to achieve learning goals. This study aimed to explore students' readiness for self-directed learning and their video use for self-directed learning in online video-based platforms. Using a sequential explanatory mix-method approach, three hundred and nine Digital Animation students in the Klang Valley region of Malaysia participated in a questionnaire survey while three groups of senior students from the same sample participated in the focus group discussions.
