This study is an examination of the illustrations and paintings of Reginald Marsh that focuses upon Marsh's depiction of Great Depression-era New Yorkers. Marsh's use of materials and his associations with mediums are examined, as are Marsh's repeated images and archetypes. Reflections of Marsh from primary writings including his own, and a scrutiny of notable Marsh works are used to weigh his identity as an American Scene painter, Urban Regionalist, and Social Regionalist. Marsh's sympathy for his subjects is weighed against his portrayals of New Yorkers and their interpersonal and intrapersonal functions. Though Marsh was considered a flaneur of his time, his gaze- object relationship is altered by the presence of modern day communication, a phenomenon continuing today.
