This thesis presents an examination of American World War I bond posters. Five bond posters were selected as examples of typical styles that would have been used throughout America's time in the war. These posters were set in their historical context through a discussion of the war, The Committee on Public Information's strategies for propaganda, and the current trends in art at the time. To determine the relationship between American poster art and the modern art movement in Europe, four artworks created by German Expressionist artists were selected and compared alongside the American posters. This comparison also illuminates the uniquely modern approach to advertising and propaganda that the war period introduced to the United States and its visual culture.
