This paper examines the effects of uploading and downloading images to and from Sina Weibo, a China based social media platform, using both mobile and desktop interfaces. With millions of images being uploaded to social media on a daily basis, it is important to understand how these platforms alters the structure and recompresses those images in order to streamline them for sharing on each particular website or application. This research looks specifically at how different downloading techniques paired with different uploading techniques change the structure of the downloaded image from that of the original when downloaded from the website/application. Exif data, metadata, quantization tables, compression data, encoding types, as well as file structure is examined across each of these resulting images against the original JPEG image. This data can then be used for cross reference in a forensic setting to better understand how an image would behave if it had been uploaded to Sina Weibo as opposed to other social media applications.
