Video games are an expanding medium both in terms of the amount of money spent every year and the proportion of the population who plays games. This activity is also frequently perceived as a male activity, sometimes to the detriment of women who participate in the community. This study examines the intersection between masculinity beliefs and motivation for video game use using two empirically derived instruments that have been validated through previous published literature: Yee's Motivation for Play in Online Games scale and Mahalik's Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory. An online survey of Massively Multiplayer Online games was administered that found several clear correlations between an individual's endorsement of specific masculine norms and what drives his or her use of video games. This provides further direction for the creation of specific models of how masculinity impacts video game use as well as clinical insight for working with clients who are heavy video game users.
