The business problem explored, in this study, was a lack of understanding relations within diverse teams to achieve optimal team functioning, especially concerning culture, gender, and generational dynamics. The purpose of this qualitative case study research centered on the organizational benefits in a globalized marketplace as team-level micro improvements has a material impact at the macro organizational-level to sustain long-term competitive gain. The following research questions guided the study: 1. How do team members in a multiculture/gender/generational team form trust while being managed from a transformational leadership perspective and what is the influence of the larger organizational system on this phenomenon? 2. What are the perceptions team members in a multiculture/gender/generational team have regarding the factors affecting team performance while being managed from a transformational leadership perspective? 3. How is team performance affected by the existence or absence of trust in diverse team performance in a transformational leader context? The conceptual framework that guided the study included trust as a factor to increase knowledge share optimizing diverse team performance with other prevailing factors of importance impacting team dynamics. The data sources were one-to-one interview responses from 11 research participants of one U.S. State Department of Transportation, internal organizational documents from the Department of Transportation, and external industry thought leadership from media trends. The analysis of research themes collectively resulted in a suggested link between transformational leadership and intercultural competence. Four primary themes emerged from the data: diverse team success was relational, diverse team success included trust leading to knowledge share, leader implications suggested an influence on the dynamic ecosystem, and leader implications suggested an influence on unconscious bias and perceived value. The transformational leadership discoveries included a heightened cultural competency, which required an increased awareness of self and others, identified as a skill. The heightened cultural competency also entailed the motivation to address team tensions, regarded as a willingness, therefore embodying both skill and will to effect change. Findings from the study validated themes that resulted from the collective research data. The study contributed to the practice of business by comprehensively indicating specific elements, such as trust, predicated optimized performance, and diverse dynamic challenges can be mitigated with the influence of a transformational leader. The research contributed to the business literature by indicating that improvements in diverse dynamics of organizations require a top-down accountability culture permeating throughout the organization to the team level.
